Classroom activities will teach the students air concerns, inspection, maintenance and proper use of SCBA. Computerized equipment will be available to test all students SCBA face piece for proper seal and regulator flow testing will be demonstrated. Students will be exposed to their own reactions of both the mental and physical effects of SCBA use upon the firefighter and taught how to deal with each in real time evolutions. A newly designed situation solution and confidence development training module created by Kearney Fire Department will be available for use by all students to experience different fire scene problems and their solutions in simulated fire rescue situations. Student equipment that does not meet required testing period dates will not be utilized. Students should be physically fit, clean shaven and able to perform strenuous tasks in full gear. In 2025, the schedule tentatively includes responses to the 2024 spring tornadoes, the Bettys Way Fire at North Platte, and the gas explosion in O’Neil. Explosives are broken down into categories and the dangers associated with each. Safety precautions associated with explosives will also be covered and how students can implement those safety precautions in their daily duties. Next, instructors will cover military munitions and the four categories they are broken into. The instructors will have inert training aids from each category so students can see and touch the ordnance items and get a better idea of size, shape, colors, etc. Inherent dangers with specific types of ordnance and how to react if an unexploded ordnance ((UXO) is found and what actions to take are covered during this portion of the class. Lastly, the instructors will touch on Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) components of IEDs, types of IEDs, how the enemy uses them indicators, and how to react to an IED are covered in this last block of instruction. Instructors will use real life incidents and experience to help students understand the real-world hazards associated with explosives. UXO, and IEDs and how to safety react to an incident involving these items. 518: Grain Engulfment Rescue Instructor: Craig Berg This course provides the knowledge and skills required to perform a Grain Engulfment Rescue - the skills and knowledge required to rescue a victim engulfed in grain. This course requires a basic knowledge of Confined Space Rescue techniques as well as knowledge of lockout/tagout procedures as prescribed by OSHA and other regulations. Removal/rescue from grain bins and hoppers, grain bin cutting procedures, entrapment prevention and hazards of working in and around grain storage facilities are also addressed in this course. Removal of victims from locations requiring high-angle rescues is not covered in this course due to the advanced nature of this training. Training for this course includes the use of the Institute’s Grain Engulfment custom built 35’ Rescue Trailer that contains a grain bin, grain hopper and metal (grain bin) cutting station that allows for replication (to the extent possible) the “real world’ environment in which grain rescues occur. This trailer provides the realistic challenges of performing these rescues in a safe environment. This class is an eight-hour class and instructors will provide students approximately four hours of free time which may be used to view vendors or participate in additional grain rescue simulations. The class will provide three hours of classroom instruction on Friday which must be attended to participate in hands-on portion on Saturday and Sunday. Hands-on portion will begin Saturday afternoon after grain bin is loaded. You will spend time in the classroom discussing vital lifesaving topics such as Modern Fire Dynamics from the latest NIST and UL studies, Transitional Attack, and S.L.I.C.E.R.S. Instructors will utilize the most current research to assist in developing basic fire attack skills. Participants will then witness this training in action by entering Customized Firefighter Trainings live fire trailers. One trailer is a fire attack simulator. It simulates a small house fire with propane burners and the use of class A materials. The other trailer is for flashover. This trailer lets the firefighter witness the awesome life cycle of an unfriendly fire from ignition to flashover. Learn to recognize the conditions leading to Flashover—how it happens, how to recognize the rapidly developing fire, dense smoke, high heat, and rollover which are all present in the unit. Others will be allowed as interested observers but are expected to self-identify as non-firefighting participants The unique hazards of electric vehicles require firefighters to exercise effective and safe tactics when approaching ALL modern vehicle incidents. Electric vehicles (EV) adoption and development are growing in every market segment, including passenger vehicles and light trucks, heavy trucks and fleet vehicles, RVs, mass transportation, material handling equipment, heavy equipment, and farm equipment. Members expected to supervise and execute coordinated, effective, and safe modern vehicle fire attack should attend this hands-on course. Includes EV hazard awareness, strategic and tactical considerations, situation-specific fire/explosion hazards, systematic hazard elimination, planning for response, suggested operating guidelines, post-fire handling, and includes hands-on coordinated tactical skills training. Learners in this course will demonstrate recognition of electric vehicle hazards and high-risk situations, technology and coordinated vehicle fire attack tactics and equipment to reduce risk while improving effectiveness and safety. Instructor: Darin Clark and Kevin Jarvis Have you recently had your ISO evaluation completed and have the results? Or do you have one coming up? This course will take an in depth look at the ISO PPC grading schedule. The Insurance Service Office (ISO) / Verisk - Public Protection Classification (PPC) program was created as tool to rate the ability of a community to respond to structure fires within their area of responsibility. The three parts of the survey that ISO looks at is the Fire Department, the Water System, and the 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Center. We will be doing an overview of what each part of the PPC survey entails, the type of information the ISO Field Representative will need, how to prepare for the survey, and discuss Alternate water supply and how it can affect the ISO survey. If you are looking to improve your PPC score or prepare for an evaluation, this course will be a great opportunity to understand how to improve the score for your community and gain a better understanding of the ISO process. 527: Introduction to Drones on a Fire Ground Instructor: Aaron Beckman - NebDrones Will be a 3-day class taught by 4 UAS part 107 certified Instructors. 3 instructors which are current firefighters who have hundreds of hours flying all types of missions within the Fire Services. In the 3 days, you will learn the rules and regulations pertaining to the Fire Service from the FAA. How to build a drone program within your Fire Department. You will learn how to read weather, airspace, and how to determine the risk management of when to fly or not for your department. Students will get hands on experience with training drones to learn the basic flying skills. Students will learn what to do and what not to do on a fire ground to protect their department's investment in drones. Students will learn how to read basic thermal readings by flying thermal drones and also participate in case overviews from past working fires. Students will learn about mapping and how maps help on the fire ground. Students will learn how to fly drones on Search and Recues missions. Students will learn how to fly with multiple drones in the air. Through classroom principles students will gain the knowledge and resources to help their department through the loss of a fellow firefighter. Listen as the Widow of a Fallen Nebraska Firfighter goes into details about the struggles following a line-of-duty-death and what she wishes she, her husband and his fire department could have done differently. Also, hear first hand accounts from the men and women that worked the 2022 Road 739 fire near Elwood that claimed the life of Chief Darren Krull. On July 28, 2011, the day a four-alarm blaze ripped through a medical building at 445 Biltmore Ave. in·, Asheville, NC. Captain Jeff Bowen, who had gone twice into the building searching for people trapped, had collapsed inside. The 37- year-old, 13-year AFD veteran was pronounced dead at Mission Hospital. Hear Chief Burnette tell the story of the Biltmore Ave. fire and the line-of-duty death of Captain Jeff Bowen. National Fallen Firefighters Foundation guest speaker, Fire Chief Scott Burnette started in the fire service in his hometown of Mills River (NC) as a junior firefighter in 1988. Chief Burnette moved onto Asheville, NC fire department where he earned an Associate's Degree in Fire Protection Technology from Gaston College, a Bachelor's Degree in Fire Safety Engineering Technology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and a Master's Degree in Executive Fire Service Leadership from Grand Canyon University. Chief Burnette is designated as a Chief Fire Officer through the Center for Public Safety Excellence and is a graduate of the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program. Chief Burnette worked his way through the ranks and was promoted to Fire Chief in November 2009 where he served until his retirement in 2024. 529: Rapid Intervention: Fireground Insurance Instructor: Logan Watts Firefighter survival and Rapid Intervention is usually an afterthought or low priority for most fire departments in terms of training and fireground tactical considerations, until it's not. The reality of today's fires is that we operate in more rapidly evolving conditions and are more often than not found routinely behind the proverbial eightball. In this 12 hour course students will benefit from 4 hours of classroom (Friday), with 8 hours of hands-on training (Saturday/Sunday). Friday's lecture will lay a knowledge foundation of the importance of mindset associated with rescuing our own and understanding the 'Why' before the 'How'. Hands-on training will focus on simplifying Rapid Intervention tasks through focus of basic skills that can be stacked to perform basic and advanced firefighter rescues. Sunday's final evolutions in live smoke conditions will allow students to work in crews with GIFD cadre members in a controlled, realistic environment to bring everything together and showcase skills acquired through the weekend. Skills and tactics taught will be reality based referencing real world experience and data provided to ensure realistic training. Students can expect to be pushed mentally and physically while gaining confidence to return to their departments and teach the skills learned.
